Before embarking on the trek, a comprehensive briefing awaits you at your Moshi accommodation. It's advisable to arrive at least a day prior to the trek's commencement. During this time, we'll conduct an in-depth pre-trek briefing, review your gear, and arrange any necessary equipment rentals. Meals: On your own Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi |
Day 1 |
Hotel to Mti Mkubwa CampAfter a hearty breakfast and the briefing, we set off from the hotel to Londorossi Park Gate, which is approximately a 3-hour drive. From there, a rugged forest track accessible only by 4WD vehicles leads to the Lemosho Glades. We trek through the enchanting forest trails to reach the Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.
|
Day 2 |
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 CampFollowing breakfast, our journey continues as the path gradually inclines, immersing us in the vast heather moorland zone. Crossing several streams, we ascend over the Shira Ridge, passing by the Shira 1 camp, until we arrive at the Shira 2 camp nestled amidst moorland meadows beside a gentle stream.
|
Day 3 |
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco CampOur route from the Shira Plateau takes us eastward up a ridge, where we encounter the junction leading towards Kibo's peak. Continuing our trek, the path veers southeast towards the Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). Descending from the tower, we reach the second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier, eventually arriving at the Barranco Camp. While the elevation remains similar to the start of the day, this segment is crucial for acclimatization, preparing our bodies for the summit bid.
|
Day 4 |
Barranco Camp to Barafu CampFollowing a nourishing breakfast, we navigate a steep ridge, conquering the Barranco Wall and traversing the Karanga Valley towards the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. The ascent leads us to the Barafu Camp, marking the completion of the South Circuit, which offers panoramic views of the summit from various perspectives. At Barafu, we set up camp, rest, savor dinner, and make final preparations for summit day.
|
Day 5 |
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka CampIn the early hours (around midnight to 2 am), we commence the arduous journey towards the summit, navigating between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Ascending northwesterly, we tackle challenging scree slopes until we reach Stella Point on the crater rim. This segment is mentally and physically demanding but rewards us with a breathtaking sunrise at Stella Point. Continuing onward, we may encounter snow on the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Descending from the summit, we return to Barafu for lunch before reaching Mweka Camp, where we spend our final night on the mountain.
|
Day 6 |
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to HotelAfter breakfast, we descend further to the Mweka Park Gate to receive our summit certificates. Lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles come in handy. Comfortable attire such as shorts and T-shirts should suffice, but keep rain gear and warmer clothing within reach. A vehicle awaits us at Mweka gate, taking us back to the hotel in Moshi, completing our remarkable Kilimanjaro journey.
