Day 1 |
Hotel to Machame CampToday, we embark on our journey from Moshi to the Machame Gate, which is the starting point of our trek. The drive takes about 45 minutes and passes through the picturesque village of Machame nestled on the lower slopes of the mountain. Once we arrive at the park gate, we begin our trek through the lush rainforest on a winding trail that leads us up a ridge. The trail might be muddy and slippery at lower elevations, so it's recommended to use gaiters and trekking poles for stability. After a few hours of trekking, we reach the serene Machame Campsite where we will spend the night.
|
Day 2 |
Machame Camp to Shira CampAfter a hearty breakfast, we continue our trek with a gradual ascent through the enchanting heather moorland zone. We cross several streams and ascend over the Shira Ridge, passing by Shira 1 camp, until we reach the picturesque Shira 2 camp nestled amidst moorland meadows near a gentle stream.
|
Day 3 |
Shira Camp to Barranco CampToday's trek takes us from the Shira Plateau towards the east, following a ridge where we encounter a junction towards Kibo's peak. The path then veers southeast towards the imposing Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). Descending from the tower, we pass the junction leading to Arrow Glacier and finally arrive at Barranco Camp. This segment is crucial for acclimatization, preparing us for the summit push.
|
Day 4 |
Barranco Camp to Barafu CampAfter a satisfying breakfast, we tackle the challenging Barranco Wall and traverse the Karanga Valley towards the junction with the Mweka Trail. The steep ascent leads us to Barafu Camp, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the summit. At Barafu, we rest, refuel, and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the summit day ahead.
|
Day 5 |
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka CampIn the early hours of the morning, we embark on the final ascent towards the summit. Navigating through challenging scree slopes and glaciers, we make our way to Stella Point on the crater rim. After a short break at Stella Point, we continue our journey to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where we are greeted by a breathtaking sunrise. After celebrating our achievement at the summit, we begin our descent back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved lunch. Continuing down, we reach Mweka Camp where we spend our last night on the mountain.
|
Day 6 |
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to HotelAfter a final breakfast on the mountain, we descend further down to the Mweka Park Gate where we receive our summit certificates, marking the successful completion of our Kilimanjaro adventure. The lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the descent. Once at the gate, our transportation will be waiting to take us back to the hotel in Moshi. Reflecting on our incredible journey, we bid farewell to Mount Kilimanjaro, filled with unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment.
