6 Days Umbwe Route Overview

This route is recommended for experienced hikers who are well-prepared for high-altitude trekking.
Route Details:
- Duration: The Umbwe Route typically takes a minimum of six days, but seven days are preferred for better acclimatization.
- Terrain: This route traverses diverse landscapes, including montane forest, moorland, heather, alpine desert, and ice fields.
- Altitude Gain: The trek starts at 1700m (5577ft) at Umbwe Gate and ascends to 5895m (19341ft) at Uhuru Peak.
- Altitude Loss: After reaching the summit, the descent leads back to 1700m (5577ft) at Mweka Gate.

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe CaveCommence your journey from the hotel to Londorossi Park Gate, a scenic 3-hour drive. Navigate through rugged forest trails accessible only by 4WD vehicles to reach the Lemosho Glades. Trek through enchanting forest paths to the Mti Mkubwa campsite.

Umbwe Cave to Barranco CampEmbark on a steep ascent from the rainforest to the Barranco camp situated in a scenic valley. Temperatures may drop, signaling the transition to higher altitudes.

Barranco Camp to Karanga CampTraverse towards Kibo's peak, encountering the Lava Tower and Barranco Wall. Acclimatize in preparation for the summit bid at the Barranco Camp.

Karanga Camp to Barafu CampAscend the steep Barranco Wall and traverse the Karanga Valley towards Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit. Prepare for the summit push at Barafu Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to HotelDescend to Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. The terrain may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. A vehicle awaits at Mweka Gate to transfer you back to the hotel in Moshi, concluding your Kilimanjaro adventure.
